HISTORICAL PLACES in KONYA

Konya, located in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye, which has been the cradle of many civilizations throughout history, and also on the Silk Road route, one of the most important trade routes in world history, is today one of the unique centers combining its historical heritage and cultural accumulation. The first village life started in Çatalhöyük. Çatalhöyük, located in the province of Konya, is known as a centre of the first cultivation made in the world history. The Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük in Konya Province was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

Konya has long historical and cultural background that expands to cover the cultures of Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine Great Seljuk, Anatolian Seljuk, Ottoman States periods. Moreover, being the capital of Seljuk Empire for a long time, and the Karamanids Konya still has the characteristics of a city of civilization and culture.

In the first half of the 12th century, during and after the reign of Sultan Ala ad-Din Kayqubad (1219,1236), Konya became the center of science and art in the world. Scientists and artists from all over the Turkish-Islamic World gathered in Konya. Madrasas, which are the first examples of schools or university campuses, form the basis of secondary and higher education in the Seljuks. Today, many contemporary educational institutions, which are the continuation of Konya's magnificent madrasas, continue to be the backbone of the future in the light of the tradition, knowledge and experience they brought from the past. Today, there are five universities in the city.

SCIENCE and EDUCATION in KONYA

Konya, which witnessed the birth of many civilizations throughout history, have also become one of the important centers in the field of science and wisdom. Turkish influence that started to appear after the Seljuks conquered Anatolia and outstanding madrasahs, libraries, palaces and mosques of Anatolia started to be erected in Konya. Scholars, scientists, philosophers, and poets were always respected and protected in Konya palaces. Today, many contemporary educational institutions continue to be the backbone of the future in the light of the tradition, knowledge and experience they brought from the past. Konya has five major universities with a total of more than 150.000 students. Selcuk University was established in 1975 as the first state university in Konya. The second one, established in 2010, is Necmettin Erbakan University, separated from Selcuk University. The third one, established in 2018, is Konya Technical University, separated from Selcuk University. The foundation universities are KTO Karatay University, founded in 2009, and Konya Food and Agriculture University, founded in 2010. In addition, it also includes special education centers for students at different levels.

 

Konya Science Center

Konya hosts the Konya Science Center, which is the first science center established with the support of the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council (TÜBİTAK). Konya Science Center welcomes its visitors with its closed area of 26 thousand 250 m², an open car park area of 14 thousand m² and vehicle roads, 11 thousand m² of walking paths, 47 thousand m² of green area, located on an area of approximately 100 thousand m². The facility, which also includes a wind power plant and solar panels, is an important example of green building in Turkey. Konya Science Center is a complex covering many different branches with thematic exhibitions, outdoor exhibits, observation tower, planetary house, conference rooms, laboratories, and library. The institution, which introduces visitors of all ages to the smiling face of science, offers its visitors the opportunity to learn by applying and experiencing.


 

Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden

Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden, which was opened by Selçuklu Municipality in 2015, has a total usage area of 7,600 square meters with a 3500 square meter excursion area. Butterfly Garden's 1,600 m² butterfly flight area is the largest butterfly flight area in Europe and one of the few in the world. Offering a natural habitat for different kinds of colorful butterflies from tropical countries, Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden also has approximately 20 thousand plants of 98 species, along with different animal species. In addition, there are children's playgrounds and the "Flower Garden", which is visited in the season, in the Valley.
